Nanny vs. Responsible Adult: What's the Difference?

If you've spent any time looking into childcare work in BC, you've probably noticed "nanny" and "Responsible Adult" get used almost interchangeably — which makes sense, since the two roles overlap in a lot of ways. But they're not quite the same thing, and understanding the difference matters, especially if you're trying to figure out what training you actually need.

A nanny is a job title. It describes someone who provides childcare, typically in a private home, for one family at a time. There's no formal licensing body overseeing nannies in BC, no government-issued "nanny certificate," and no fixed set of qualifications required to call yourself one — families set their own hiring criteria, and it varies enormously from one household to the next.

Responsible Adult, on the other hand, is a specific credential — the certification required to work with children in a licensed childcare setting in BC, like a daycare or preschool. It's not a job title so much as a qualification, earned by completing a recognized course covering child development, safety, and the fundamentals of care. Anyone working in a licensed facility has to hold it (or an equivalent), regardless of what their actual job title is.

So here's where it gets interesting: a nanny can also be a Responsible Adult, and a Responsible Adult can also work as a nanny. The two aren't competing categories — one describes where and how you work, the other describes what training backs you up. A nanny who holds Responsible Adult certification is, in a real sense, doing the same private, in-home work she always has, just with a recognized credential behind her that most other nannies don't have.

That distinction is exactly why it's worth considering the Responsible Adult Course even if you have no plans to ever work in a daycare. It doesn't change what kind of childcare job you do — it changes how qualified you can prove yourself to be while doing it.
