If you're thinking about opening a home daycare or a licensed facility, one question comes up again and again: what actually happens during a licensing inspection, and what are they looking for?
In BC, licensed childcare settings are overseen by a local Community Care Facilities Licensing Officer, whose job is to make sure a facility is meeting the health, safety, and care standards set out in provincial regulations. Inspections can happen when you first apply for a license, and then periodically afterward to make sure standards continue to be met.
Generally, a licensing officer will be checking things like:
Inspections aren't meant to be intimidating — they exist to protect the children in care, and a good licensing officer is often a helpful resource, not just an evaluator. If something isn't up to standard, you'll typically be given clear guidance on what needs to change and a chance to fix it before anything more serious happens.
If you're considering opening a home daycare or a larger facility, it's worth reaching out to your local licensing office early — before you've committed to a space or a plan — so you understand exactly what's expected from day one.
